first post

not exactly sure how this is going to go, or how often I am going to be posting, but I figured I would try this out. I've started reading my neighbor Austin's blog which in turn made me decide to try it out.

I'm home for Thanksgiving break and so far have done nothing productive. I feel like I eed to get up early tomorrow and get something done. Something meaningful. Something that will benefit not only myself, but also others.

Yesterday as I was driving home from church I saw an oder woman on the roadside licking up some trash. It seemed a little out of the ordinary. I stopped and asked if I could help her. Turns out that she was renting a house out to some college students who had gone home over the break. They had treated the place awful, acting as if they had no regard for anything. It wasn't theirs so why should they keep up with it. For the next half hour I helped her pick up beer cans, papers and other various items from the yard. It felt good helping her out.

Back at school in Lakeland I've tried to get involved with different organizations that do this kind of stuff. Lighthouse Ministries, for instance, goes out once a week to a homeless shelter and supports by cleaning, passing out food items into different neighborhoods, etc. My favorite experience thus far happened about a month ago. It was my week to work with the kids and I was playing with a little girl, lets call her Sam. Sam asked to hold my cell phone which fascinated her. I let her play with it for a while and she then asked if we could call my mom. I didn't really understand why she wanted to do that, but then she told me that she hardly ever got to see her mom, and she didn't have a father at all. Instantly I told her that we could call my mom. We did and for about 2 minutes she talked to my mom. After I left the center, I called my mom and told her the situation. She and I were both torn to peices by this little girl. I can't imagine how that 2 minute phone brightened Sam's day, but I know that it brightened mine.

Little things like this make me smile, make my heart light.
I don't say this to boost up my sefl-esteem or to make myself look good, but its just a suggestion that everyone should try to do something for someone else. It will most likely make you feel good too.
